The students, led by the Restorers Greta Schonhaut and Giorgia Busetto, have restored the four corners of the Oratorio di Santa Margherita di Antiochia in Padua. The work has been conducted in accordance with the Superintendence for the art of the provinces of the Veneto.
In accordance with the Regional Representant of the Cultural Heritage Ministry, the restoration work was focused on the four corners of the nave of the Oratory, four paints monochrome angels panels, their frames and three pilasters. The intervention has not been extended to the socle and the angular panels if not the very first cleaning step to adapt it to the cleaning level that will be place at a later time.
The restoration was preceded by the photographic investigation performed with detailed photographs of the conservation status before intervention, in the various phases of the work and of the conclusion.
Were carried out graphic documentation of the conservation status of the entire building, to in evidence the gaps, gaps, cracks, etc.. That documentation shows the different state of conservation of the four corners of the building with heterogeneous situations of degradation on which operations will be performed in a specific way.
In addition, were performed a microscope stratigraphy of the pilaster, marbles and frescoes to clarify the plaster’s composition and the nature of repainting.
The restoration of the lower parts of the Oratory began with the cleaning intervention preceded by numerous cleaning tests on the different constituent materials.
We proceeded to a dry mechanical cleaning, followed by the chemical cleaning. The latter required the use of ammonium carbonate with various concentrations and supporting material according to the composition of the material to be cleaned.
Once the cleaning done, the students began a phase of pre-consolidation of the crumbling surfaces and then move to the consolidation by injecting fluide plaster inside the wall detachments.
Finally, gaps and cracks were filled and retouched so allowing their aesthetic integration.
